Butterfly Kisses Completed

Making hourglass quilt blocks is pleasantly repetitive and the results are beautiful. Butterfly Kisses is made entirely of organic fabrics, mostly Sarah Watson's Biology collection. I completed hand stitching the binding on Wednesday and it is already in use on my bed.

I used a new-to-me quilting technique featuring little hand stitched crosses, an idea shared by Jen Kingwell on a Fat Quarter You Tube session. You can find links and more details on my earlier post here. This style of quilting blends in nicely with the Biology backing fabrics too - just love the Biology feature fabric! This particular fabric also worked beautifully in the hourglass blocks, creating a variety of visual effects.

Quilty details:

Each hourglass block is 5 1/4" square
13 rows of 9 block - 117 in total
Organic cotton fabrics, mostly by Cloud 9
Hobbs Organic cotton batting
Scanfil Organic cotton thread
Quilted by hand with DMC embroidery thread
46" x 67"
(117cm x 170cm)

It is gorgeous! I love the solids you chose to go with the prints, and I love how the little quilting stitches look like fireflies on the back! What a fun and beautiful finish! This certainly deserves to be in the Bloggers Quilt Festival, hint, hint :)

Karen, I love the backing fabric just as much as the hourglass pattern! How beautiful. Waking up under this quilt would be a cause for morning smiles.

A beautiful finish, and the back is as lovely as the font. The cross stitches make a nice effect. Nothing like sleeping under a new quilt for the first time.

Thanks Renee - what a lovely compliment. I do love the Biology fabrics. I made a small ‘Plus’ quilt featuring the panel fabric on the ‘back’ too - in my Etsy shop.

Your quilt is beautiful Karen. I really like the pattern on the front and the backing fabric is stunning. I bet you enjoy seeing it on your bed after all of the work you've put into creating it.

The hour glass quilt is a beauty and I like the pattern on the other one too. You must have so many quilts by now. What do you do with them?(after every bed has one)

Massive job!! Well done!!

Hi Diane, the ‘other one’ is the back of the hour glass quilt - very pretty too. Many of the quilts I’ve sewn have been made as gifts - others are in use around our home and on beds. Some have been commissioned or made to sell on Etsy.

Classically simple yet not modern-bleak, you did a positively wonderful job. To quote Mary Poppins.. It is practically perfect in every way!
